David Zinczenko is the former editor-in-chief of Men’s health and a regular contributor to ABC News. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers, cook This, Not That! and The New Abs diet and has written The 8 Hour Diet as well as a number of cookbooks. In the Zero Belly Diet, Zinczenko sets forth an approach to weight loss and more importantly overall health, that is based on the cutting edge science of the epigenetics of metabolism and the microbiome.

To put my review in context…

I am an avid reader of nutrition books, have a background in molecular biology, and usually enjoy in-depth discussions of the science behind different approaches to health. I’m often perturbed by books that make a lot of claims and don’t back them up with sufficient explanations of the underlying science. The unsatisfied curiosity and/or skepticism is like having an itch that you can’t scratch. Fortunately, I’ve already read quite a bit about the theory and am now looking for additional information on the application of the theory. So for my purposes, this book was fantastic. Zinczenko provides a comprehensive “how to” guide that is simple and entertaining.

And of course there are those of us who aren’t science nerds and are super busy and simply looking for a solution to their weight and health issues. After all, not everyone wants to be knee-deep in mitochondria and cytokines. If this describes you, you’re in luck.

Diving into the content…

Scientific studies in the past few years have emerged demonstrating that your waistline and chances of developing a chronic, degenerative disease (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease) are largely determined by the expression of certain genes.

ZERO BELLY DIET presents a very interesting idea. Instead of trying to restrict calories, the idea is to focus on ways to turn off genes that cause belly fat. There are three main aspects to the strategy: First, speed up your metabolism; second, remove inflammation throughout your body; third–and this is the key, turn off fat storage genes. This final step is achieved by “focusing on nine power food groups that are linked directly to the emerging science of nutritional genetics – the study of how nutrients in foods influence gene expression.”

After describing the dangers of belly fat, and giving an overview of the strategy, the real core of this book is in part Two–the “Zero Belly Diet.” Here, the author describes the types of food that are really going to take aim at those genes that cause belly fat. For example, the author discusses using red fruit to turn off the obesity genes: “More and more research has begun to show that some fruits are actually better at fighting belly fat than others. And the master foods all have one thing in common: there are red, or at least reddish.”

ZERO BELLY DIET is not just about what to eat or what not to eat. There are entire chapters on “Zero Belly” workouts. For example, Chapter 9 is all about how to really develop your abs. The author describes a set of workouts that he calls the “full body challenge.” He explains that you can actually develop abs by doing workouts that aren’t actually targeting your abs per se. He explains: “That may sound impossible, but it’s not. In fact, we use our abs for almost everything we do, and most of the time when you’re exercising – what are your running, lifting weights, practicing yoga, or dancing with the Stars – you’re working your abs.
