Dana Nolan is a completely different girl than she used to be after surviving a brutal attack by a serial killer. A brain injury has left her forgetful, often unable to say the correct words and, well, behaving like a complete brat. She returns home where, as it happens, her best friend disappeared without a trace seven years ago. John Villante is a war veteran suffering from PTSD. Why have I included this little tidbit? Well, he’s in the book a lot without actually doing a lot.

Dana eventually starts to ask questions about her friend – Casey Grant – and because this is supposed to be a thriller, you can assume that it won’t end well.

Don’t purchase this title if you’re expecting a mystery or a thriller. It’s neither. Tami Hoag has obviously done her research about brain injury and PTSD, because that’s all this is. An exploration of a character recovering from a brain injury and a character suffering from PTSD. The mystery/thriller element is completely incidental. It doesn’t even really kick in until about 200 pages. Until then we’re left with Dana and her recovery. Unfortunately, I got tired very quickly of Dana acting like a child and then complaining about everybody treating her like a child. I also got tired of being told over and over and OVER AND OVER again that “After Dana was different than the Before Dana”. If you gave yourself a dollar every time it was repeated, you could probably go and buy yourself a better book.

There’s no mystery here. The identity of the culprit is completely arbitrary. Because the crime is seven years old and Dana actually has little to no memory of it, there’s very little complexity to the crime, thus the author doesn’t have to create a bigger conspiracy.
