I first heard about Dr. Wahls when I ran across her Tedx talk called “Minding Your Mitochondria.” I was very impressed with how she turned her health around naturally from being in a wheelchair due to MS to being back on her feet and her MS in remission. She has refined her “Protocol” over the years since the TedX talk and this book details her recommendations. She also explains the “why” behind each recommendation. In addition, she details detoxification, exercise, and the electrical stimulation that helped her gain her mobility back. Many of her recommendations are obviously skewed towards Multiple Sclerosis, but the majority can be used for any autoimmune disease or even cancer.

The main feature is the diet which includes lots of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, grass-fed meat and fish, fermented foods, and seaweed. She gives three levels of diet: The Wahls Diet, Wahls Paleo, and Wahls Paleo Plus (the most restrictive and the one she follows). She recognizes that not everyone will be able to jump in and do the Wahls Paleo Plus, so she gives guidelines for those who want to ease into it or do a less restrictive version. The Wahls Paleo Plus is very low in carbohydrates and qualifies as a ketogenic diet which she explains is being used to treat various neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s. It’s a diet the brain should love!

Dr. Wahls includes a Medical Questionnaire to track symptoms and a template for journaling (the “Wahls Diary”) your progress so you can make adjustments and see what worked well for you and what didn’t. I think this is an important step (although I find the constant naming of everything “Wahls” annoying).

The actual reading pages are 334. Then there are some recipes, appendices with helpful food lists, and a resources section.
