I didn’t really want to read this book, but I was curious. Two teens meet on the ledge of a bell tower and change each other’s lives. It’s being compared to The Fault in Our Stars (as is any emotionally resonant new YA fiction these days), which has been criticized for romanticizing cancer. I don’t agree with that assessment of that novel, but I did worry that this novel would somehow romanticize suicidal feelings. But I decided to give it a go, and I’m glad I did.

If I didn’t want to read it, I definitely didn’t want to be enchanted by the sad story, but I was. Violet is a girl dealing with the tragedy of losing her sister in a car accident a year ago. Violet and Eleanor were both in the car. Eleanor died. Violet lived. That’s a lot for a 17-year-old to handle. It’s changed her, but maybe it’s changed her into the Violet she should have been in the first place, more cerebral, less concerned with popularity.

Theodore Finch is known as Freak. He’s always changing his look and his outlook. There’s rebel Finch, 80’s Finch, Prep Finch, but who is the real one? He deals with anger and depression and suicidal thoughts. Violet captivates him, and he eventually breaks through the shell she’s built up around herself.

The book captivated me. It was a little angsty, self-absorbed, as is much of YA fiction, which creates that great combination of looking back to my past and relating with the teens in my life. But it quickly got real, too real. Finch’s battles with mental illness are inexplicable and since they are mostly seen through his POV, they aren’t explained away, which is real. We don’t often get the luxury of understanding.

30 Lessons for Loving is a great book which will teach every reader. I have over 20 years of ministry experience, use a pastoral counseling and psycho-educational approach in my practice of ministry, and have 18 years of masters and post-masters level education, training, and practice, and still learned from the great wisdom found within this book.

Dr. Pillemer makes the great point that for much of human history, it was the elder’s who were the trusted experts in our families and communities. He believes, and convincingly makes the case, that the longest married people today have great insights and advice for us all about relationships. Dr. Pillemer’s approach is to gather the advice from hundreds of individuals and analyze their input to discern core themes, both positive and negative. What we are privileged to read is the sum of the collected wisdom of hundreds of wise people who are experts in marriage, family and relationships by virtue of their long and successful experiences. I suspect the advice contained here might also apply to non-traditional long-term relationships.

I found the organization of the book to be simple and easy to follow, with 5 chapters, each containing 6 lessons for us to ponder and apply. Some of the lessons are simple, such as how to equitably divide the household and other chores. Other lessons are more profound, such as not being able to know who is Mr./Mrs. Right, or that we marry into a family and should know and do that intentionally. I could go on, but if you are curious, then just look though the sample and decide for yourself.

This is a 5-star book because I believe it covers all of the essential areas when it comes to relationship advice: selection of partner, children, extended family, finances, romance, etc.

I love this new and improved Stephen King 2.0. I am not going to rehash the publisher’s summary or go too deep into the plot as some consider writing about ANY plot points as spoilers. There are no spoilers here, just my opinion of the type of readers that would enjoy Mr. Mercedes as much as I did.

In my opinion, there are three major buckets of Stephen King fans,

A) Readers that love his earlier works that featured densely written supernatural stories that kindled the type of mental terrorism that innovated the genre. Novels that are deep in character and plot line development to the point they easily reach the level of an 800+ page epic. (See: The Stand)

B) Readers that love his lighter works that loan themselves to the psychological thrillers of the physical and mortal world that are so terrorizing, they wish it was due to a supernatural entity. Novels that don’t have as much depth (relatively speaking) or number of characters, but still great reads. (See: Misery)

C) Readers who just enjoy to be entertained and terrorized by the master of horror, regardless of the believability of the plot’s premise or source of the fear.

For the hardcore fans that reside in segment A, I think they will feel Mr. Mercedes is a well written novel, but a rare miss by the author they have grown to love. That would be an unfortunate mis-characterization if readers think Mr.

Like the Ice Cream Man’s (stop me when I’m passing by), all Stephen King novels are guaranteed to satisfy.

In MR. MERCEDES, King serves up a super-odd, Neapolitan triple scoop: an emotionally-disabled, milquetoast mid-40s lady who still lives with moma; a 6’5″ African-American high school kid; and, the main protagonist Bill Hodges, a rather boring, recently-retired and divorced police detective in his mid-60s who failed to solve that last big case (of a Mercedes running over and killing 8 people, including an infant, waiting in line at a job fair).

The novel begins with Hodges parked on his recliner, suffering through the honks of Dr. Phil and drowning his sorrows in a bottle, while occasionally gazing into the end of a loaded revolver’s barrel. In the day’s mail comes a letter from a guy claiming to be the Mercedes killer, mocking Hodges for his failed efforts to find him. Without providing too many details, the best description I can find for Mr. Mercedes is a psychotic and Oedipal Ice Cream Man bent on toying with Hodges, whom he refers to as “the Det Ret.”

As the plot develops, the mismatched trio eventually merge in a rush against time to try saving 4,000 screaming teeny-boppers at a “Round Here” [see, One Direction] concert from the psychotic bomb plot of Mr. Mercedes. Adding to the tension, the kid’s mom and sister are in the crowd.

Undeniably, King is still on his game, even without the supernatural to aid his story. The twists in the plot keep coming to build toward a concerto crescendo. This isn’t a “character-driven” plodder that’ll be taught in lit classes 100 years from now. With the King, The Story Rules and the characters driving the story are sketched with enough detail that you are drawn into the narrative and care what happens.

We first learn the name of Outline‘s narrator, Faye, about 84% into the novel (at least according to my Kindle). It’s a blink it or miss it moment. In fact, I didn’t register her name until I saw it cropping up in reviews of the book.

Cusk’s Goldsmith Prize nominated novel isn’t so much a story as it is a fragment of time in the life of the narrator. Faye has traveled to Greece to instruct a two-day writing class. When she arrives in Athens she teaches her students, has dinner with friends and spends time on a boat with a man – referred throughout the book as “my neighbor” – who she met on the plane during the flight over. For Faye, there’s no character arc, no dramatic tension, no epiphanies or revelations. She fades out of the story just liked she faded in, with barely a ripple.

And yet Faye is anything but a passive character. While she might reveal very little of herself, she is able to exert influence on those around her. Within minutes of meeting Faye, “my neighbor” on the plane is providing intimate details about his failed marriages. The people she visits and dines with in Greece – both stranger and friend – are quick to unburden themselves of their life story. The students in her class, asked by Faye to write a story about an animal, provide stories that are personal and confronting.

The most striking of these is Penelope’s story about Mimi the dog. Penelope initially buys the puppy for her children. But as often happens, the responsibility for the dog quickly changes hands from the children back to Penelope. Unfortunately Mimi is a naughty dog, making messes all over the house and shredding the furniture. Because she now feels obligated to care for the dog, Penelope grows to hate Mimi (Trigger warning in regard to animal abuse):.

I first heard about this book when Terry Gross interviewed the author on “Fresh Air.” I just had to read this book. And it is a wonderful read–and memoirs are often not that much fun to read.
The author was 30 years old when he discovered that his father was not an antique dealer in Vermont, found this out after he’d become a journalist and used those skills to explore some evidence that his father was, in actuality, a rather notorious marijuana dealer. Note that the senior Tony Dokoupil dealt only in marijuana and did so at the historical moment when an increasing number of post-Vietnam Americans began to imbibe!
The writer saw little of his father, but instead lived with his mother who knew all along what her former-husband was up to. And what he was up to was handling on the wholesale market tons and tons and tons of bailed marijuana, first from Mexico and later from Colombia.
Maybe some of my fascination of this story relates to place. I was raised in Vermont and actually used to buy antiques. So I knew several antique dealers. Then in the 90s my domestic partner and I moved to Key West. Later we would move to South Beach. And those are the places where the subject of this memoir spent much of his time transporting and selling his product. The way it is portrayed in this memoir is just fun to read.
I love the tone of this memoir, a son who is not condemning but at moments in the writing sees the humor of the life of his father–and of his mother who took her son to New Mexico to dig up a bunch of money the dealer had buried there. Let’s face it, a dealer just doesn’t walk into a bank with bundles of money to deposit.
Eventually he is caught. And what happens and how he got a rather reduced sentence is also fascinating.
This is just a great read.

THE BURN is not a typical diet plan book. Instead, it’s a book for people who have plenty of willpower, but for some reason their body is stuck at a certain number. Haylie stresses that when you hit a plateau in weight loss, it most likely has nothing whatsoever to do with your will power, or some type of weakness. Instead, it’s about biochemistry. She explains, “Stalled weight loss, especially under conditions where you are giving your body everything it needs to lose weight, is a sign that something has gone wrong in the system.”

First off, the author has you take a little survey to figure out what your specific biochemical problem is. Towards that end, Chapter 2 is dedicated to figuring out if I (inflammation) is your problem. Similarly Chapter 3 is dedicated to focusing on D (digestive) problems. Chapter 4 takes a look at whether H (hormonal issues) might be causing your plateau.

Once you figure out where you should concentrate your efforts, the second part of the book provides the specific burn plans customized just for your specific issue. You will use one of three different “Burn” plans that best fits you: I-Burn, D-Burn, or H-Burn. So, the idea is to figure out what has gone wrong in your biochemistry, then seize upon a plan that specifically addresses your unique issue.

For each of the three “Burn” strategies, Haylie first includes an overview on what you can expect for this plan, and then she describes the type of food that you will eat. After this introductory material, she provides a specific day by day plan. For each day there is a shaded chart that summarizes in a clear fashion what you’re going to do. Haylie also includes a chart of food portions, as well as a grocery list of items that match your specific burn plan.

I have not completed the program yet, but will update as I go.

This book is essentially 3 detoxes meant to help dieters get through plateaus and also to optimize health. The author advises you choose which plan based on either your weight loss goals, how much time you have, or which health issues you want to work on. I decided I’d probably try all three. I’ll also add that the plans all look appropriate for vegans, vegeterian and people avoiding gluten or other food allergies. It is, however, not low carb as its a lot of fruits and vegetables. Each plan has you start the day with a smoothie and then two bowls of soup, three glasses of a special tea, and of course lunch and dinner.

The three day I-Burn is supposed to target inflamation and water retention in the body, and help you lose up to 3lbs. I found Pomroys writings very inspirational, but even still I felt overwhelmed just writing the grocery list. There is an enormous amount of produce to be purchased, from the common (celery) to the unusual (daikon). I ended up paying $96 in groceries for 3 days worth of food! After starting the plan, I realize a lot is waste as she has you make twice as much of the “burn soup” for no apparent reason. I will say that after completing day 1, I’m not sure how I feel about it. The food is not very satisfying, but I understand I’m eating for the nutritional properties. It is also very hard going without dairy, bread, sugar, coffee and alcohol!

Day 2 of the I-Burn. Feeling very unmotivated, I’ve gained a pound and my stomach feels bloated and constipated. I decided to blend a cup of coffee into my smoothie to try and get things moving. This is going against the detox, but I don’t care at this point. I feel like stopping now, but don’t want to waste all that food.

Unfortunately, the history of the human species suggests that all too often groups fail to live up to their potential. Many groups turn out to be foolish; they bet on products that are doomed to failure; they miss out on spectacular opportunities; they develop unsuccessful marketing strategies; their investments and strategies go awry, hurting millions of people in the process, according to Cass Sunstein and Reid Hastie in this book.

Whereas in theory groups should be smarter than individuals, they often end up making worse decisions than would have been made by the average individual in the group. In the first part of the book, the authors identify four different ways in which this can occur:

• When the group amplifies rather than corrects the individual errors of its members
• When the group members follow the leader instead of revealing their own opinions and knowledge
• When the group tends to become more extreme as a result of internal discussions
• When group members concentrate on shared information and ignore critical information that only one or a few people have.

The second part of the book provides a number of suggestions for reducing the risk of group failure, focusing on group deliberation and how to make it more effective, the importance of separating the process of generating possible solutions from the process of selecting a preferred solution, ways in which combining information from multiple group members can result in statistically better decisions, the role of experts, and the use of tournaments and prediction markets.

Descent just ascended to the top of my 2015 favorite list. So what if it’s only the first day of the new year. I feel confident this novel will hold the lead for the next 364 days. What did I like so much about Tim Johnston’s latest novel, which is scheduled for release next Tuesday, January 6? Just about everything. Driven as much by the plot as by the characters, this mystery is heartbreaking and gut-wrenching, the kind of novel that holds you captive until the wee hours of the morning.

A family of four—mother, father, brother, sister—travel to the Rocky Mountains for one last trip together before their oldest heads off to college. At dawn on their first day of vacation, Caitlin and her younger brother, Sean, leave their parents sleeping at the motel where they’re staying and hit the trails—a cross-country track star exercising her trained muscles with her brother following closely behind on his bicycle. A tragic accident occurs and only one sibling returns, broken in both body and spirit.

Grant and Angela Courtland’s marriage is in trouble from the beginning, a relationship not strong enough to weather a tragedy as horrific as a daughter gone missing and a son nearly lame. The characters are human, flawed, their emotions so raw and real. Johnston skips around in the chapters following the accident. At times I felt lost and confused and bewildered, much like I imagine this family felt. But once he narrowed his focus, I realized this story belongs to the man and his son who refuse to leave the mountain without Caitlin because they refuse to believe she’s dead.

Sean is merely a boy when his sister disappears, but in facing his grief, he becomes a man, one with more courage than physical strength. This guy has heart, always in defense of the underdog.

Descent by Tim Johnston is a highly recommended thriller/family drama.

Grant and Angela Courtland have taken their children, Caitland and Sean, on a last summer vacation in Colorado before their daughter Caitland starts college in the fall. When Caitland and Sean leave their hotel for an early morning run (Caitland) and an accompanying bikre ride (Sean) in the mountains. Only Sean comes back and his return is via a hospital stay for a badly broken leg. Caitland has seemingly disappeared after accepting a ride from a stranger in an effort to get Sean help.

Suddenly the Courtlands are a family with a missing daughter and a broken son. The whole family begins to implode under the tremendous emotional toll they are undergoing between Caitland’s disappearance and Sean’s recovery. Weeks become months and then years. Angela stays at the family’s home in Wisconsin, slowly falling apart while Grant stays in Colorado, helping an elderly man while hoping to find clues leading to Caitland’s return. Sean takes off in his dad’s truck and crosses the country on his own adventure before circumstances send him back to Colorado.

Descent by Tim Johnston shows how a single choice can change so many circumstances for each of his characters.. While the writing is elegant and poetic, the actual development of all his very flawed characters is somewhat lacking. Angela’s character is the least fully formed, while the development of Grant and Sean is based more on their actions than any real insight into their psyche.

If you have never watched an episode of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” then this book is not for a jabroni like you.

But if you are a glue-huffing degenerate who enjoys the antics of the most wretched gang of drunks, this is a self-help book for written just for you suckers, er, geniuses.

The funniest sections were Charlie’s by far. It’s ironic that an illiterate’s writings and rants were the best. Love his advice for stalking the one you love. His avian brilliance also reminds us why he is the pre-eminent expert on US bird law.

And his recipes for making cheese are priceless. Remember that old Polly-O String Cheese Commercial? Just order a pie, but hold everything but the cheese!

Other cheese making recipes include stealing from rat traps or making your own cheese with orange juice and half and half, letting it sit around for a couple of weeks behind a toilet…and enjoy!

That Charlie, he’s a cheese-rat genius.

Dennis’ sections are lucid and intelligent. He actually gives good advice on how to not get stuck doing Charlie work and how a man should properly apply makeup (to his face, abs and male parts). Dennis may be a potential serial killer, is questionably a rapist and absolutely is a voyeur, but other than that, he’s a golden god with a body sculpted to proportions of Michaelangelo’s David, so what he says matters.

I love Frank’s advice how to manipulate everybody. That man knows his stuff. And his recipes! Mmm-mmm! Now I know how to make a delicious rum ham using only a canned ham, a few bottles of rum, a gun and several bullets. Plus Italian parsley for garnish to make it classy. There’s his blue-jean tea recipe which require crabs dredged out from the polluted Delaware river.

It is not unusual for a celebrity to produce a tell-all memoir about his or her embarrassing, crippling addictions, and in his new memoir actor-comedian Patton Oswalt has confessed his own.

Not to drugs or alcohol. Oswalt’s fine with those. No, his drug-of-choice was on 35mm film, projected on a 72-foot screen, night after night.

In “Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film,” Oswalt’s second book, he details the four years he spent compulsively watching over 250 movies while writing for “MADtv” during the day and working as a standup comedian at night.

Those were movies in a theater, mind you. He also watched movies on TV but those didn’t count. Nor did any movie where he missed the first 5 minutes, because that’s not how compulsion works.

In the early 90s Oswalt frequented the New Beverly theater in L.A. which featured an eclectic run of classic movies on film, as God intended. After a double-bill of “Sunset Boulevard” and “Ace in the Hole” one night he went home and looked them up in the five massive books on movies he owned, and he checked them off and added the date and the theater name and by that point it was all over. Once you start making checkmarks in a list your downward-spiralling obsession is pretty much guaranteed. Like a baseball player growing out his beard or a poker player with lucky socks, he knew, he knew that if he watched all the movies on his list and absorbed the lessons they had to teach he’d ultimately become a great director.

As he wrote in the forward to the book, “This will be either the most interesting or the most boring addiction memoir you’ve ever read.”

Fortunately Oswalt is funny and he nails his target — himself — with easy, self-effacing wit.

Let me start this by saying that I’m not the typical audience for this kind of book. I’m really not into spiritual things or secret societies or whatever other tag you want to pin into this… I read this book so I could make fun of it but now that I’ve finished it I think the joke is on me.

To understand why I’m giving Illuminatiam 5 stars you have to know my full story so bear with me. Randomly last year (after a few glasses of wine, full disclosure) I googled for “official Illuminati website” to see what would pop up. Not surprisingly there are 100s of websites claiming to be the Illuminati but unlike all the others that looked like bygone Geocities junk, when I clicked the one at the top I was surprised to discover a cleanly designed page claiming to represent the “real” Illuminati. Weird. So I dug deeper. The more I dug the further I fell into this Illuminatiam rabbit hole that you’re about to discover.

You can look it up for yourself so I’ll skip the details but remember that was last year. I really didn’t know what to think of it but it was weirdly authoritative. I couldn’t stop digging. I think part of me kept checking their websites and social media (yes Illuminati is on Twitter, who knew) in the hopes that they’d say something glaringly obvious that’d point them out as a bunch of online trolls and prove my skepticism correct.

After a while of inactivity, Illuminatiam posted a TV commercial on Youtube. It got hundreds of thousands of views and hundreds of comments in a week. ONE WEEK. In the video, they mention something called Illuminatiam without explaining what it is. So, randomly, again, I searched Google and I found this book last week.

This is where it gets weird.

My nephew had a very hard time in high school and was unable to complete it through traditional channels. With some work, we refocused his energy onto obtaining the GED to ensure he was not left behind and was able to have the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with completing such an important milestone in a young persons life.

We needed an easy to follow, concise and clear book, since we could not afford a tutor or special classes. This book did exactly that.

This Kaplan study guide breaks down the exam in a way I think makes sense; what is on the test and how do I pass it.

My nephew instantly got his confidence back and his nerves went away when he knew what to expect, and this book gave him that foresight.

This book basically breaks down the test into the competency areas, Math, English, etc. Then is prepares you in a method similar to their SAT test prep. They use two stages. One stage is to give you an idea of the information needed and try to teach it to you in the simplest, laymen’s terms. The other is through example and practice tests.

We took the first practice test to get an idea on where he was at skill level. Then we went through the book cover to cover. When we took the second test, he had already improved to above the passing mark. From there we went back to the areas he struggled with and studied those in more detail. Long story short, he PASSED FIRST TRY!!

This book will act as your own personal tutor. If you learn from example or through study, this book has you covered. Each topic broken down in easily digestible pieces.

The GED is important and I am sure that you are taking it quite serious if you are reading this review.

Well, actually, Detective Jane Rizzoli goes out of Boston and into Africa to help solve the Boston homicide of avid hunter, Leon Gott in book 11 of this popular series. It appears Gott’s son disappeared in Botswanna several years ago, and the quest to find a link between the tragedies of both father and son takes the 2 women on an adventure to sub-Saharan Africa. Tess Gerritsen does an amazing job of describing the deep and dark African jungle, notably, as a formidable habitat for some of its most dangerous predators (both human and feline). I love to learn, and when an author of my favorite fiction genre is able to both educate and entertain, that it is a win-win.

With most of the previous Rizzoli and Isles novels taking place in Boston, it was great to experience a new and exotic location throughout a good portion of the story. As always, the dialog, interaction, and friendship between the two main characters with polar personalities is pure genius and a lot of fun. And while crime-fighting, dynamic duos are certainly not a new concept in fiction (“Dr. Watson, I presume…”), fortunately, it is one that still works, and Ms. Gerritsen works it well.

Just like all of the books in the Rizolli and Isles series (which has made it to the small screen as a TV series on the TNT cable channel), I definitely had a hard time putting this one down! And no skipped pages, either. I tend to be an impatient reader and do not appreciate when an author spends too much time on unimportant details, such as over self-analysis by characters, including their feelings, philosophy, and minute relationship details with other characters (aka Patricia Cornwell). Tess Gerritsen keeps the story and plot moving at a great pace, and there is no room for boredom.

“Die Again,” the latest Rizzoli and Isles novel by Tess Gerritsen, packs a wallop of suspense and edge-of-your-seat intrigue into a superbly executed and plotted crime thriller. Gerritsen is truly at the pinnacle of her literary and storytelling abilities. The plot is compelling, intricate, and impeccably executed. The characters are finely developed. And as always, the author takes considerable time to explore and develop the emotional and psychological landscape of the series’ two main characters; little-by-little, from each book to the next, we learn more about what makes Rizzoli and Isles succeed despite the many obstacles that life has thrown in their paths.

What’s particularly exciting about this book is that nearly a third is set in Africa within the Okavango Delta of Botswana. To read this tense and taut thriller is to experience what it might feel like to set off on the safari vacation of a lifetime only to discover that this same vacation was going to cost you your life. Not only are you surrounded by an immense wilderness full of powerful wild predators, but it slowly becomes clear that the worst predator of all is sitting beside you at the campfire: he’s your wildlife expert and you’re terrified to realize that you may be his next prey. Since these sections are written in the first person from the point of view of the safari’s only survivor, you’ll be unable to escape their terrifying emotional impact.

As with all other Rizzoli and Isles crime thrillers, the rest of the book is set in and around Boston where most of the tale’s brilliant detective, forensic, and autopsy work takes place.
