As Ina Garten points out, “there is ahead of time and there is WAY ahead of time.” That’s why she’s included recipes that cover a wide range of “make ahead” schedules. Some of them, especially soups (one example is Zucchini Basil Soup) and gravy (Make Ahead Turkey Gravy with Onions and Sage) can be completely cooked and frozen for months. Others can only be made a few hours – or perhaps a few days- ahead of time.

This includes Thanksgiving turkey. Although it seems obvious now that she’s suggested it, I like the idea of cooking and slicing the turkey well before guests arrive….just have to make sure it stays warm.I bought this book primarily to streamline our Thanksgiving and other holiday menus – especially since we have both meat lovers and vegetarians in the family.

I also plan to make a Roasted Vegetable Lasagna for the vegetarian option, and freeze it and that solves the main course situation. There are also some side dishes and desserts in here that I’ll be contemplating, perhaps the Cauliflower and Carrot Puree (can be prepped ahead of time but not frozen).

The majority of these recipes are NOT frozen ahead of time so if you’re looking for a freezer cookbook this isn’t the one. You might want to keep this in mind but it didn’t bother me. I’m happy to simply save time and not be a frazzled host. The main sections are cocktails, To Start (primarily appetizers), Lunch, Dinner, Vegetables, Dessert, and Breakfast.

Here’s the major pros of this cookbook:

1. Lots of vegetarian options: Warm Fig and Arugula Salad, Tomatoes and Burrata (a type of cheese), Quinoa Tabbouleh with Feta, Zucchini and Goat Cheese Tart and plenty more.

2. Minimal to no last minute prep. When guests arrive, relax and have dinner ready to serve in minutes.

I just read this book from cover to cover, and I’m itching to get into the kitchen and make a lot of these recipes. This book delivered more than I had hoped for. The first thing that makes me fall in-love with a cookbook are pictures. This book has them, as in a gorgeous photo of each and every recipe. The reason I’m such a fan of Ina Garten is that she makes fancy looking food, that is actually quite simple. Of course, it’s not processed meals, that you microwave. She’s cooking from scratch, but I find her recipes to be user-friendly, and always successful. I say that her recipes work, with confidence, because I own all of her cookbooks and have made (and blogged) over a dozen of them. Not one recipe of hers, that I’ve made, has flopped.

Sure, some of her ingredients might be on the pricey side (like a 4-5 pound beef tenderloin), but not all of her recipes are super expensive. What appeals to me about Ina’s recipes is that many of them look healthy, colorful and I want to dive right into a dish of whatever the recipe photo looks like. This book gives great tips on how to prepare recipes ahead of time. We’re not talking spending two days of making freezer meals. Ina’s approach is how to prepare dishes just enough so that when company arrives, it’s a matter of heating, baking or serving some dishes at room temperature. Some recipes taste even better, when left for a few hours (or a day) for all the flavors to marry. We enjoy entertaining, but sometimes I wear myself out (yes, I am can be a perfectionist), and I know this book will become my new best cooking/baking friend.

In the cocktail section, my eyes locked onto a beautiful Greeke mezze Thyme Roasted Red Pepper plate. It’s totally doable and a whole lot more impressive than chip and dip.

Yes, much of what negative reviewers of this book have to say is true: the writing is blunt and simple, the characters lack depth and complexity, it is quite male-focused in its subject matter and language, it has a bunch of quasi-religious mumbo-jumbo, and so on. This book should not be put on the list of great literature for the ages. There are doubtless many novels that cover subject matter from this book far more artfully. As I read the book, I was aware of its hokeyness and lack of redeeming literary qualities. I am, in fact, usually the first person to criticize books that read like this.
And yet, I have to say – and I feel a bit sheepish about this – that I found it meaningful, even profound at times. How can I say this, given my criticisms? First of all, unlike many reviewers, I did not approach this book with great expectations. No one told me that this was Shakespeare or Tolstoy; I had never even heard of it until it was recommended to me recently. And by the end of page 2, I had adjusted my expectations further. This clearly was not going to be winning the Booker prize.
But I found the book moving in its simple way. The characters deliver their statements without subtlety, but subtlety is more a literary virtue than a philosophical one. In fact, I essentially came to view this work as a life philosophy expressed as a fable, so I didn’t particularly mind that its messages were not buried far beneath the surface.
Are those messages novel? No, but what of it? Novelists have been recycling themes for centuries, becuase many themes are of enduring interest and relevance. The point is, the messages are worthwhile and deserving of consideration.

A review of the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

This review is written by Anthony T. Riggio. After reading the above book, given to me by my youngest sister, as a gift, during a recent visit, I promised her I would read it. My sister, who suffers from a mental illness, said the book had impacted her and thought it a spiritual work. Mental illness is certainly a stigma in our society but I have come to see it as a blessing by God to allow my sister to see things in an unvarnished way. She has lost everything and lives a most simple life in a therapeutic family care environment. She lives there because neither of her siblings are ill prepared to handle things when the chemical unbalance occurs, which it inevitably happens at the unscheduled moments.

Even in her limited world, she has been able to see the spiritual where most of us cannot. That she spent the full publisher’s price infuriated me but then I stopped to think about the genuineness of her generosity and love she has for her older brother, I decided to graciously accept her gift.
The Alchemist is a simple story which some might refer to as a fable. It is however the story of a boy, Santiago, who search for the meaning of a dream which hopes to lead him to a treasure. It is the story of one finding his/her Personal Legend (roughly destiny and/or meaning for life).

The book emphasizes the reason for each living in the now as opposed to one’s past or future. This is often a difficult task but a profound spiritual experience when fully accomplished because in that now moment we experience ourselves and get a glimpse of God. This book however is not a religious book because as the author advised religion provides the discipline for the community experience in its devotion to God.

This third and final book in the Century Trilogy, spanning the years from 1961 to 1989 with an epilogue dated November 4, 2008, gives a perspective of those times of incredible political and social turmoil as seen through the eyes of several different families. The characters are descended from many that were introduced in Fall of Giants: Book One of the Century Trilogy, continued in Winter of the World: Book Two of the Century Trilogy, and have significant roles during this period of revolution and change. Through their eyes and involvement, the reader experiences events such as the American Civil Rights movement, the Cuban Missile Crisis, as well as the assassinations of US President John F Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King. In addition, the war in Vietnam, Nixon’s resignation and the fall of Communism, along with commentary on publishing, television programming, folk music and rock and roll are related through the various viewpoints of the characters in this novel intertwining the fictional with the real historical figures in the unique way that only Ken Follett can write. That’s a lot of material for just one novel and this one weighs in at a hefty 1120 pages.

Assuming a certain level of research and allowing for the license of relative fabrication provided when writing FICTION, the novel maintains a fast pace switching to and fro between the different time periods, countries and characters involved in the pivotal historical moments.

This will be a rather lengthy in depth review of the series collectively, excluding the prequel. I will start the review by giving my overall opinions and feelings, and conclude with basic book by book synopsizes, which I will try to just hit the big ideas and leave out major spoilers.

I picked up this book after seeing the trailer for the Movie. As a member of the Teen Wolf Fandom, I had to get in on the action since Dylan O’Brien, our favorite non-supernatural of Teen Wolf, and my personal favorite actor was playing the lead of the movie adaptation of The Maze Runner. He is a profound actor so I had to read the series before the movie came out.

BEST literary decision I have made in sometime. The second book of the series actually makes it into my top 2 favorite books of all time, number one is reserved for TFiOS, but The Scorch Trials is two for sure. TMR is easily in the top 5 and The Death Cure ranks in the top 10. This series is magnificent. Many compare it to THG or Divergent, which it is similar in the respect that it revolves around teens and is a part of a dystopian society, however the story in this series is unlike anything I have ever read. It is one of the only trilogies I have read that everything is not so black and white. You read this series and every 50-100 pages you find your self rooting for the bad guys, then rooting for the good guys, then no longer knowing who is good or bad, if the main characters are good or bad or what the heck is going on!!! Perhaps the protagonist is actually bad, maybe the antagonists are good, you just don’t know what to think!!! It is so profoundly written and keeps you guessing all 1000+ pages of the series, and about 200 chapters.

This is a good sci-fi series that draws you in right from the start. Thirty teenage boys trapped in the center of a maze, with no idea as to where they are or why. Worst of all, none of the boys have any memories of their life before they got there. Things begin to change dramatically when the last two teenagers arrive, Thomas and Teresa (the only girl!).

I downloaded the complete collection and read all the books at once. Each book picks up right where the last one left off, so there is not much repetition when you read one right after the next. I definitely thought the first book (The Maze Runner) was the most enjoyable. While there was plenty of action, the characters seemed to do the most thinking in this book. The pacing was pretty good, revealing little bits at a time–enough that you felt it was moving and that there’d be some resolution at the end of it.

The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure shed more light on the mystery of the maze, as well as what life is like in the real world. Dashner did a great job creating a really creepy and scary feeling of life outside of the maze, making some characters almost wish they were back there. There were a lot of very suspenseful scenes, however, I thought there was too much action. It seemed they just kept running from one fight to the next and it got tiresome. I know this book is really targeted to a younger audience, so that might not be a problem for them.

The fourth book was not what I expected at all. I was hoping for more of the story of Thomas and Teresa before the maze. The Kill Order, however, is set several years before Thomas and Teresa ever enter the picture. Instead, it describes how the world got to the state it did.

Most of us have heard of Emotional Intelligence (EI) and of course IQ. Well, Eat.Q. is concept that blends your knowledge of nutrition (what you know you should do) with mindfulness and EI skills in order to help you make healthy choices and lose weight (if that is your goal). Eat.Q. is a technique which asks you to "press the pause button" before you eat anything and make a quick assessment as follows: first, identify how you are feeling. next, accept that you have these feelings (instead of stuffing them down or trying to escape from them). and finally use these feelings to help you make a decision about what and what not to eat. The author provides a thorough description of each of these steps along with tips and tools to help you accomplish each one. With practice, this will all become second nature and you will be able to face each "moment of decision" with a mindful pause during which you use your emotions to help guide you to a smart decision that is in line with your goals. Brilliantly simple!

If you have never dabbled in the arenas of mindfulness or Emotional Intelligence before, there will certainly be a learning curve. But it’s all so logical (even for my very scientifically minded left brain!) that it doesn’t seem like a chore or anything that is impossible to do. It’s just something you need to work on and practice in order to achieve success.

Although this is billed as a weight-loss book (see the subtitle) I think it is important to point out that this is more of a Mindful Eating book. Good to know this for two reasons… First, if it is your goal to lose weight, then that’s perfect. the Eat.Q. concept can definitely get you there.

Put down those diet books, and raise your Eat.Q. instead.

A synthesis of the concepts of emotional intelligence (EI), emotional eating, and mindfulness, Eat.Q. is the capacity to make healthy food choices from an insight-driven mindset vs. an emotion-driven one.

To raise your Eat.Q., Susan Albers presents her EAT method (which, thankfully, is anything but a diet!):
“A combination of mindfulness and emotion-regulation skills adapted from the EI model, EAT helps you harness your emotional intelligence to alter your relationship with food and make healthy eating decisions. It can help you manage your eating, withstand cravings, and recover from slips or binges, even if you’ve struggled in the past. Here’s your direction: increase your EI, and you increase your ability to stop emotional eating…However, to make the best use of this new tool, you must be willing to see the `problem’ of overeating in a new way. It’s not a nail you can pound into submission with a hammer–this is, with dieting. It’s a mind-body issue that restriction can’t fix.” (p. 60)

Appropriately enough, her book is like a delicious three course meal. The first part of the book looks at how the four dimensions of emotional intelligence (EI)–the abilities to perceive, understand, use, and manage feelings–influence your relationship with food. By strengthening these abilities, you’ll be more likely to take a mindful pause and respond vs. react when it comes to making food decisions. The second part of the book explores the common barriers to raising Eat.Q.: dieting, pleasure seeking, social eating, stress, and emotional trauma. (Ring any <dinner> bells with you?) The final part of the book presents 25 tools for putting the EAT method into your daily practice.

There are no chapters in this book. Is this a literary conceit, as in a writer playfully breaking rules, or is she making a point that what she has to say is so important that chapters might interfere with concentration? Since Robinson will never be accused of playfulness, and I don’t sense she’s dictatorial, I offer a third possibility: the lack of chapters (although there are section breaks) may be metaphoric. Because once you get into the story, you will become a wanderer, compelled to the journey, hungering for some bit of plot but only receiving as much as is necessary to give you enough energy to continue. You will be fed by stunningly compassionate depictions of the apparent worst in human behavior, and by contemplations of the divine, such that this will allow you to continue on through the sparse landscape that is Lila.

One of the high points for me, a reader who counts Gilead as one of her top five books of all time, was the return of the good Reverend Ames. This thoughtful, open-minded, generous man sees Lila as a gift, not only for her companionship but as a window into another dimension of human life and spirituality. Because while Lila is only a few degrees removed from feral, she is bright and curious, and her perspective is riveting if bleak. Indeed, her intellect causes her intense pain, hungering as she does for understanding about life on earth and her place in it – as don’t we all. In this, as with Ames’ tortured acceptance of his own mortality and that of his friend Boughton, the book touches universal chords.

This story primarily consists of internal monologue, and much of it is oblique, so if you are not drawn to that kind of writing, this may not be for you.

Lila voices that part of us that is fundamentally alone, and preternaturally outside the the bounds of society. I love this character. She is not the least cuddly in her wildness, and she knows only how to stand in the world she has learned. Marilynne Robinson has mastered that archetype of the loner ruled only by the internal truths of her ties to nature. Robinson has returned to Gilead, a poor town on the verge of collapsing to the surrounding wilderness, resisting only with the basic decency of its citizens. Robinson has woven a moral fiber which embraces the Bible as it is woven into the rules of empathy and natural order.

Lila was born into the ultimately neglectful family. She was found by Doll, alone on a porch and half dead at age of four. She and Doll wander the world in the days preceding the Dust Bowl. "Doll my have been the loneliest woman in the world, and she was the loneliest child." They were ruled by "Whatever happens, just be quiet, and it’ll pass, most likely." We find her years later, aged by the places she has seen, drawn to the world of Gilead. She has found a savior in the kind, old minister who has fallen in love with her. The courtship is the loveliest thing I have read in years. They come to value the comfort of the other standing by her shoulder. She has come to care for the kind old man and finds him beautiful. Their marriage is lyrical to me.

The ethical code in Robinson’s books is a rather lovely one. The old minister says, "Any judgment of the kind is a great presumption. And presumption is a very grave sin." Lila come to believe that the search for meaning is like knowing a song. "In a song a note follows the one before because it is that song and not another one.".

It’s unfortunate and obvious that the co-writers are stalking this page. They own a website based on the series and I’m sure their fans will be in here to bury the honest reviews. Any fan of any work will praise what is on paper and have faith in it’s writer and not go along with it just because theres one name bigger than the others. I doubt George wrote even 1/3 of this book’s contents and you can clearly tell. George wrote the backstory (that we already know since it was told to us by his characters in the previous books) but he allowed Elio and Linda to fill in the blanks and that is a mistake.

I will praise them for filling in the blanks on some of the already established westeros history and exploring Essos a bit more but the poor writing drags it down. There is beauty in the art work of characters, house banners and locations but thats all I really liked. While this may be for the hardcore fans I kind of wished this came out after the series had ended so George could’ve written it instead of two people who want to add their own “taste” in here. My main issue is that some of the places we’ve wanted to know about? Get like…2-3 pages of explanation.

*UPDATE*

I stand corrected. Instead of this book being written by a “maester” they could’ve just made this book a simple dictionary and history book. I guess putting in the maester thing was what the two co-writers wanted to do in case they got criticized for their writing. RedTeamReview on Youtube said it best: It’s better if George had solely written this book instead of having two fans (who’re not in his head, even if they did it together) write content for this world. For example: I love Stephen King and J. R. R. Tolkien BUT…I wouldn’t want King writing a story in Middle-Earth. Why?

Know what you are buying. Is this a book written by George R. R. Martin? Sort of. Is this a book written by two of his friends? Sort of. Is it a well illustrated book? Yes. Is this a definitive history of Westeros? Not at at all. In truth I am not really sure what to make of this book, it has very nice illustrations, but a lot the writing is clearly not Martins work and left me finally understanding how a dog feels when you speak to it and it just kind of tilts his head looking at you with that wtf look on it’s face. It left me wondering what exactly is the purpose of this book?

As a definitive history it falls short in ever aspect. The book is written in the form of an unreliable narrator and from the first page it’s clear much of the information is wrong. Martin himself has spoken of a book he will write in the future that will be called "Fire and blood." Which will be like this book but much larger, more accurate, and hopefully written by Martin himself.

Now just to be clear both Elio and Linda have pointed out that they took liberties with the material Martin supplied them, filling in blanks with their own ideas and such. And that’s ok because the book is not suppose to be reliable, that’s the purpose of the unreliable narrator. Elio and Linda have also stated in a video on their own fan site that things are and can be wrong.

The book itself is suppose to be written in world but I have a hard time getting into the world because the writing is not really Martins and does not feel like his, the in character author of this book sort of jokingly points that out in the book. The style is different and the dialogue often becomes more modern in tone than Martins work.

“Love You Forever”, while a children’s book, might perhaps exert the greatest emotional impact on adults, whether or not we are parents. Although many mothers have responded from the maternal perspective, the other obvious perspective is that of any child (i.e. you and me) – boy or girl – and the realization of the profound meaningfulness of unconditional love from one’s mother, facilitated by the prospect of being able to return that level of caring in later years. As a man, I tend to imagine myself as the male in the story. Although I do have a 14-yo daughter, for me the most moving aspect, as stated above, is the anticipation (and for many, perhaps the re-enactment) of the passing of one’s mother, which I believe many women respond to as well, assuming they also tend to place themselves in the role as child.

I’d like to quote from two pre-2000 Amazon reviews of this book:

“This book is just plain touching. How can a man put into words what only a Mom can understand?”

Again, the irony here, in my opinion, is that men should be exceedingly capable of being moved by this story, whether or not they have children of their own. It may be of interest to examine whether women and men tend to assume differential roles in this story when they read it (e.g., perhaps women react most often as the mother, whereas men respond most commonly as the child).

Second:

“I had Robert Munsch on my radio show and interviewed him about the book. The book was written to honor the 2 still births that his wife had in two years. In fact the book is dedicated to these two babies.

I usually do not care for sequels, whether in novels or films. After reading Diana Gabaldon’s wonderful book, "Outlander," I was sure she could not come up with another book to match the first. I was wrong and "Dragonfly In Amber" is an exception to my rule and an exceptional book. Once you begin to read, you will find yourself absorbed immediately and probably forget the novel’s length (900+ pages). In fact, you may find yourself wishing it were longer.
There are two major storylines here. One takes place in the 18th century. Claire Randall, who had traveled back in time from post WWII Scotland to a Scotland preparing for the restoration of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, (Bonnie Prince Charlie) to the throne, had married James Fraser and confided to him the truth of her time travels. She also told him of the coming disaster of the Battle of Culloden Moor, (1745), and its terrible aftermath for all of Scotland. Together they do everything in their power to halt the inevitable uprising, including move to Paris to become part of the Prince’s entourage and perhaps effect a change in history through their relationship with the Jacobites living in France. The relationship developed between Claire and Jamie continues to grow in this book. Their intensely passionate love and close friendship is extremely moving. Although James is a very strong and competent person, Claire with her strength of character, independence, resourcefulness and nursing skills moves adeptly through another time period and is as indispensable to James as he is to her. We travel with both of them, from the Scottish highlands to the pomp of the French court, as they attempt to impact history and continue on together with a love that transcends the boundaries of time.

And I might add that no amount of therapy will cure you!
I had to go to a conference this past week–a four hour drive from my home. Since my husband drove, this gave me a glorious block of UNINTERUPPTED time to finish DRAGONFLY IN AMBER. I also brought almost a month’s worth of unread newspapers and several unopened PEOPLE magazines. In addition, I brought along a newly published and highly acclaimed book of short stories written by one of my former students. My intentions were to finish my book and then catch up on the aforementioned readings. HA! Thankfully, I also packed Gabaldon’s third book because no amount of self-control would allow me to read anything but VOYAGER! I have no idea when I’m going to clean my house or do my Christmas shopping (I do still go to work). The only reason I’m writing this review is that I don’t want all the books to ‘run together’.
DRAGONFLY IN AMBER is the second book of the highly acclaimed Outlander series. Jamie and Claire’s adventures continue but the story actually begins at the end. It is 1968 and Claire has returned to Scotland with her 20-year-old daughter, Brianna. The next nearly 1000 pages involve Claire, Brianna, and a young historian named Roger and their attempts to find out what happened to Jamie, the love of Claire’s life (and Brianna’s father). Most of this novel is about what happens to the young lovers in the two years before Claire escapes back through the rocks in the year 1746.
Gabaldon is an extremely gifted writer. Her character development is so phenomenal that I too, have fallen in love with the red-headed Scottish Highlander. When he says things like: “Oh, Claire, ye do break my heart wi’ loving you.” or, “Dye think I don’t know? It’s me that has the easy part now.

I have to admit that I am a little obsessed with all the various one pot styles of cooking. Starting probably way (way!) back in college, when I literally had only one pot to cook in, I made an infinite varieties of what came to be known as “stoop” (ie not quite stew, not quite soup). Now, thankfully, while I can afford more than one pot to cook in, I still am partial to only using one for a meal. Maybe it is the comfort of all that goodness cooking together, or maybe I am just too lazy to do a lot of cleaning up after dinner. Either way, needless to say, I have a lot of practice in this cooking method.

I will start off by saying that One Pot: 120+ Easy Meals is a worthwhile addition to my somewhat overburdened and sagging cookbook shelf. While my all time favorite I think will continue to be my handful of tagine recipes given to me decades ago by a family friend, or the timeless and always wonderful The Clay Pot Cookbook, One Pot gives some really nice approaches in a variety of styles that are accessible to almost any level of expertise in the kitchen.

Since being given One Pot, I have worked my way through several dozen of the recipes (did I mention I really like one pot recipes? lol). Most were just about dead-on as recipes go. The Kale and Tuscan Bean Soup was a particular favorite for my husband, who is not usually one for either anything Tuscan nor bean- (he has had an anti-Tuscan bias since I made him watch The English Patient, and the bean problem, well, you know..) The Mac and cheese varieties (yes, tried all of them!

Let me begin this review by saying that I have four recipes from One Pot: Salmon with Kale and Cabbage, Baked Rice with Sausage and Broccoli Rabe, Pork Chops with Cabbage and Bacon, and Sausage with Acorn Squash and Onions. They have all been very good, the pork chop recipe was incredible.

One Pot is divided into 7 sections: Dutch Oven, Skillet and Saute Pan, Slow Cooker, Roasting Pan and Baking Dish, Pressure Cooker, Stockpot and Saucepan, and Desserts. I like this method of organization because I frequently choose or look for recipes based on the technique or equipment that I am wanting to use. Each section opens with a small introduction to the equipment used. For example in the Dutch Oven Section, it goes into materials used in their construction and ideal size.

I have marked practically the entire book to try, but here a three from each section to give an idea of the scope of the recipes (plus they are all recipes that sound good to me!)

Dutch Oven: Chicken and Dumplings, Carnitas Tacos, and Pork Stew with Potatoes and Rosemary.

Skillet and Saute Pan: Shrimp with Tomatoes and Orzo, Mushroom Cheddar Frittata, and Skillet Macaroni with Bacon and Gouda.

Slow Cooker: Garlic Chicken with Barley, Pot Roast with Sweet Potato and Prunes, and Spiced Chicken Stew with Carrots.

Roasting Pan and Baking Dish: Spatchcocked Chicken with Herbs and Lemon, Spiced Cod with Couscous, and Mexican Style Lasagna.

Pressure cooker: Beef Barley and Vegetable Stew, Risotto with Mushrooms and Thyme, and Irish Beef Stew with Stout.

Stockpot and Saucepan: Warm Quinoa and Chicken Salad, Sweet Potato and Sausage Soup, and Pasta with Farm-Stand Vegetables.

I don’t know if one can label this book as a memoir. Yes Please by Amy Poehler (or can she be called the author as it has chapters written by others as well?) is a mishmash of advice, humor, essays, poems, and of course, memoir. Yes please, it is a delightful book to read, brutally honest, sincere, witty and at times harsh on herself. I never thought it would be such a pleasure to read as I have a low opinion of celebrities dishing out advice but Amy Poehler’s Yes Please turns out to be quite perceptive and refreshingly different.

What is Yes Please all about? A lot! It is a memoir with a difference, incorporating a lot of other things. Amy writes about her two sons Archie Arnett, 5, and Abel Arnett, 4. And mind you, the book is also dedicated to them. Amy has been married to Will Arnett for nine years and the two went their separate ways in September 2012. Both Arnett and Poehler have kept quiet about it. In Yes Please, Poehler describes it as “too personal” and “too sad.” She also writes about her parents, how she grew up in the Boston suburb of Burlington, about her school and about her time at Boston College. She writes not only about the good things that had happened to her but also her regrets as well. Poehler also writes about her experiences with cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana, which is why I feel the book is brutally honest. And, of course, there’s plenty of tales from Saturday Night Live.

What I really like about Yes Please by Amy Poehler is its intense honesty without giving much juice to the gossip mill. She is brutal on herself, and doesn’t paint rosy pictures where there were none.

I will first admit that I’m a sucker for these type of books. I’ve read Mindy Khaling’s, Tina Fey’s, Lena Dunham’s and even Ellen Degeneres’. I’ll also admit that I’m a 24 year old girl, and that my opinions are probably biased based on my age and the (lack of) life experiences I’ve had so far.

First of all, if you’re considering picking up the book versus buying the Kindle version, I would strongly recommend the hard copy. The book is formatted with glossy pages full of colored pictures and chapter titles that I really love (attached some photos and a video). It makes the reading experience a whole lot more exciting. Every time I turned upon a new chapter, I would have to stop for a moment and smile to myself.

That being said, I was excited about Amy’s book because I’ve an avid fan of Parks and Rec, and her previous work on SNL. To me, she just seemed like a really warm person and people only have compliments when talking about her. I couldn’t wait to read a book in her voice and learn more about her past.

Some Youtube clips that I just had to dig up after reading about them from Amy’s perspective:
SNL Sarah Palin rap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG1g5qvgtSg
2011 Emmy’s bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyFyJqx1lpc
2009 Emmy’s bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jSk8yzlm94

I’m glad to say I was not disappointed at all. Compared to some of the other authors that I have mentioned, Amy does have more stories and chapters on experiences that I couldn’t quite relate to (pregnancy, divorce, raising kids), but by reading about those stories I felt a little more prepared for the future.

ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE is one of the best books you’ll read this year. On one hand, the title implies the lessons learned by a young German orphan boy about radio waves. On the other hand, as the author describes it, “It’s also a metaphorical suggestion that there are countless invisible stories still buried within World War II.” Add in a newly blinded French girl who is forced to leave her familiar surroundings, and you’ll soon find yourself in literary heaven.

The layered meanings run deep in this book. No wonder nearly every advanced review uses the word “intricate” to describe this masterpiece. The German boy and his sister discover an old radio, where they hear science lessons from afar. There are lessons about the brain, sitting inside the darkness of our skull, interpreting light; there are lessons about coal having been plants living millions of years ago, absorbing light, now buried in darkness; lessons about light waves that we cannot see—all applicable as the story unfolds.

Readers will appreciate the short, almost lyrical chapters of alternating characters. The author helps by italicizing earlier mentioned quotes and then leaving almost every chapter closing with a message to ponder. Take for example: “a real diamond is never perfect”, “open your eyes and see what you can with them before they close forever”, and “the entropy of a closed system never decreases”. All of this is explained in a natural way, but never given out in an assuming manner. The story flows and draws your heart into its deep meaning.

Having personal connections to both veterans of World War II and members of the blind community, I can attest to the authenticity of this story’s writing.

It has been a while since I have found a book that I wanted to read slowly so that I could soak in every detail in hopes that the last page seems to never come.

When reading the synopsis of this novel, I never imagined that I would feel so connected to a book where one of the main characters is blind and the other a brilliant young German orphan who was chosen to attend a brutal military academy under Hitler’s power using his innate engineering skills.

This novel was so much more than the above states. The idiosyncrasies of each individual character is so well defined and expressed in such ways that come across the page almost lyrically. I was invited into the pages and could not only imagine the atmosphere, but all of my senses were collectively enticed from the very first page until the last.

I was so amazed with the way that the author was able to heighten all my senses in a way that I felt like I knew what it was like to be blind. In most well-written books you get of a sense of what the characters look like and follow them throughout the book almost as if you are on a voyage, but with this novel, I could imagine what it was like to be in Marie-Laure’s shoes. The descriptives were so beautifully intricate that I could imagine the atmosphere through touch and sound. It was amazing, really.

There were so many different aspects of the book that are lived out in separate moments and in different countries that find a way to unite in the end. What impressed me most was that I could have never predicted the outcome. It was as though all cliches were off the table and real life was set in motion. Life outside of books can be very messy and the author stayed true to life but in a magical and symbolic way.

This is hardly an impartial review. As somebody who has been called at some point or another the gamut of terms associated with introversion, from “shy” (which I don’t object) to “anti-social” (which I most certainly consider unfair), I found in Susan Cain’s “Quiet,” the validation and appreciation many introverts have been searching for.

In “Quiet,” Ms. Cain explains the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the 1920s and how it is that today we associate talkative, risk-taking, and action-oriented people with intelligence, beauty, power and success. The Extrovert Ideal is so pervasive that influences our work performance, educational policies, political choices, and even the country’s financial health. But the focus of “Quiet” is on exposing the myths and misunderstandings that were born when we as a culture embraced the Extrovert Ideal and turned introversion into a malady to be avoided.

To dispel the misconception that introversion is some kind of sickness or “weirdness”, Ms. Cain traces both the biological and cultural basis for introversion and extroversion and their role as evolutionary survival strategies in animals and humans. She interviews scientists who have conducted hundreds of studies to test different theories in an effort to determine how much of our temperament is a result of genetics and/or of our free will.

The best part of “Quiet” is that the insights gleaned from these studies can help introverts take advantage of their special traits and thrive on their own terms in an extroverted world. Since introversion and extroversion are preferences for a certain level of outside stimulation, Ms. Cain advises introverts to find their “sweet spot” –or what scientists call the optimal level of arousal.

First, look at this list from pg 5 in the introduction to this book:

“Without introverts, the world would be devoid of

the theory of gravity
the theory of relativity
W.B. Yeats’s ‘The Second Coming’
Chopin’s nocturnes
Proust’s ‘In Search of Lost Time’
Peter Pan
Orwell’s ‘1984’ and ‘Animal Farm’
The Cat in the Hat
Charlie Brown
‘Schindler’s List,’ ‘E.T.,’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’
Google
Harry Potter”

Of course, that is only a tiny list of the accomplishments of introverts, and she forgot to put the Theory of Evolution in that list. Let’s face it. One cannot expect people handicapped with extroversion to be able to think deeply or meditate over the serious philosophical, scientific, or supremely artistic subjects which move the deeper among us.

Okay, maybe extroversion is not a handicap, but it is important to realize that introversion is no more a handicap than extroversion. So, the extroverts deserve a retaliatory jab once in a while for treating introverts as though we are mentally and socially challenged.

This book by Susan Cain is the ultimate jab, though she is sometimes overnice toward the ones that have promoted “The Extrovert Ideal” for more than a century in the U.S. I do not believe I have read any better work dealing with the issue of personality than “Quiet.”

There are some scientific points to be made in the book, with mention of studies that show how introversion or extroversion are biologically, genetically ingrained in us, though some of the studies (particularly the one mentioning literal “thin skin”) strike me as somewhat irrelevant if not pseudoscientific.

So, the fifth edition of the venerable Dungeons and Dragons game is officially out, with the Player’s Handbook ready to be picked up, combed through and played by the world. Is it good?

I think it’s good. I think it’s a great implementation of all of the game’s best and most beloved ideas. I think it might be my favorite edition yet.

To give a little background (and you can feel free to skip this paragraph if you want to get to the meat of the review), I started with 3rd edition, which came out all the way back in 2000, when I was in middle school. I played it through high school and college, and enjoyed it well enough, but eventually the weight of its mechanics began to grate on me. By the end I gave up on 3rd edition, finding it bloated and horrendously inelegant. When 4th edition was released in `08, I was excited. I bought all the books at once and devoured them. I wasn’t sold on the powers mechanics and the intense focus on combat, but my buddies and I tried it out. We gave up after a couple months and I sold the books. It was okay, but not my cup of tea. In the end, I, like a lot of folks, gained interest in the older editions of the games, the ones that predated my own D&D experiences, the ones that sounded to me like ancient, esoteric and arcane books of mystery, whose rambling prose and absurdly convoluted mechanics became somehow enticing. We played a little bit of the older editions, mostly the old Basic edition of the game, and had a lot of fun, though it was more due to the ability to ignore the rules entirely than to any intended strength of the system. Still, after a few games we gave up on tabletop roleplaying games all together.

I am going to try to not duplicate the information provided in most of the other 5 star reviews because I agree with the vast majority of them. I am an oldster, have played every edition of D&D there has been, most of them being released when I was of legal drinking age, and IMO this is the best edition ever. I have not been this excited about a version of D&D since 2nd edition was released. It appears to me to have taken all the best, from a game design point of view, and most popular aspects of earlier editions and put them in one book. Another way to think of it is that this edition is the most true to the game principles set forth in the earlier editions, especially AD&D 1st and 2nd editions, while at the same time carrying the more modern and popular principles from 3.5 and even the much maligned 4.0.

I have to admit that I completely steered clear of the earlier play test versions, and was more than a little skeptical of the approach taken in getting feedback from so many play testers. I was worried that we would end up with a "too many cooks spoil the stew" situation; a game that was a convoluted mish-mash of everyone’s "favorite rules" creating an incoherent and largely unplayable mess. I am pleasantly surprised to say that I was 100% wrong about the effectiveness of the play test process and the finished product. Contrary to the opinions in some of the lower star reviews, what I am holding in my hands and have read cover to cover is a very "tight," comprehensive, elegant, and fun set of rules.

Who is likely to like these rules? I think both the veteran player who cut his or her teeth on any version before 3.0, and a brand new player will like them.

I love a good psychological thriller with disturbingly flawed characters and this book did not disappoint. The main character is a woman struggling to make a life for herself, fleeing her childhood and really, fleeing her mother when she is sent back to her home town as an investigative reporter. She is tasked to report on the gruesome murders of two pre-teen girls, but in the process she gets put right back in the middle of her messed up family dynamics, her small town’s social structure, and a potential romance.

Ms. Flynn nails perfectly small Midwest town life. A quote in her description of small town life,

“Like all rural towns, Wind Gap has an obsession with machinery. Most homes own a car and a half for every occupant, plus boats, Jet Skis, scooters, tractors, and among the elite of Wind Gap, golf cars, which younger kids without licenses use to whip around town.”

Ms. Flynn makes some disturbing observations about parenting and family life – and ties them in to premature death:

As to the death of a young girl, “it’s the only way to truly keep your child. Kids grow up, they forge more potent allegiances. They find a spouse or a lover. They will not be buried with you. The Keenes, however will remain the purest form of family. Underground.”

The situations described in this book are exceptional, but she breaks the image of small rural life as being ideal. Terrifying violence and dysfunction lurks beneath the surface and I have to say, she nailed it in terms of describing my small rural home town. As Flynn writes, the idealic quality of small towns is false. A question is – should people go home once they have fled extreme unhappiness? Can they go home and survive it emotionally?

BLOOD MAGICK concludes the trilogy of books about the cousins O’Dwyer. It is the story of two people who have loved one another most of their lives and yet have been kept apart by evil hundreds of years old.

THE STORY: Branna O’Dwyer and Finbar Burke grew up together and dreamed of living their lives together. The two are witches who matched incredibly well. The first time they made love as teens, however, Fin was marked with the sign of Cabhan, the evil sorcerer who tried to kill Branna’s ancestor. The mark signifies that Fin is descendant from Cabhan. Branna broke things off with Fin because she knew that they could not be together when the evil that is Cabhan continues to stalk her family. Through the first two books of the series, Fin and Branna worked together as the people in their lives intertwined. In this book, the three cousins joined by those who love them, plot the final confrontation with Cabhan that will free them all.

OPINION: This was my favorite book of the series. Branna and Fin have loved each other even though they have been kept apart by the evils of Cabhan and the curse of Branna’s ancestor. The pain and angst of these two who love each other and yet know that they cannot be together is beautifully written. At the same time, there is such rightness in the two being together that I had to keep reading every page wondering how the two would work out the problems facing them.

I especially liked that there were no false conflicts set between Fin and Branna. The only thing keeping them apart in this book is the external forces. There is no doubt that they have loved each other through the twelve years of their separation despite the fact that each has gone on to live their lives.

Thoughts: I’m a bonafide Nora Roberts fan. So much so that I own IN PRINT all of her books but about 20 and those are books that have previously been unavailable. So for me to not like one of her books is a really huge deal.

When this series started I was excited as I like her Irish series, and the magick she has in them. BUT I didn’t like the first book Dark Witch. In fact I struggled to get a 1/4 of the way into it before I just gave up. With the next book I wasn’t as excited because I hadn’t finished the first book, a first for me with her. I read it though and liked it. You can find my thoughts on Shadow Spell here. Needless to say at the end of the book I couldn’t wait for this book to come out because I really wanted to know what was going to happen with Branna and Fin. At the same time I was hoping and praying that it wasn’t anything like Face the Fire, especially as Mia and Sam were witches who’d been in love and together as teenagers.

That’s were the similarities between Mia/Sam and Branna/Fin end however. Well except for needing to defeat evil. But even then the evil is different.

Like the other books in this series Blood Magick has a cadence and flow that makes you believe you’re living in County Mayo. It takes a bit to get into the rhythm and flow but once you do you find yourself lost in the story of Fin and Branna.

Branna is a very strong character. She’s made decisions that have broken her heart, and continued on with her quest. She’s come to accept that Fin, the one person she shouldn’t love or want, is a part of their circle and a key to defeating the evil that has stalked her family for generations. This time, with him, she understands what the seventeen year old Branna didn’t and couldn’t. That what was done to Fin, wasn’t his fault.
