When I first became vegan two years ago next month, Chocolate Covered Katie was one of the first blogs that I discovered, and her recipes (and those from Angela Liddon’s blog and now cookbook, The Oh She Glows Cookbook: Over 100 Vegan Recipes to Glow from the Inside Out) completely transformed the way I cooked and ate. Over these last two years, I’ve turned many (non-vegetarian) friends onto Katie’s blog and healthy treats by re-posting her recipes on Facebook, and all of my friends who have tasted or tried her recipes have told me how amazing they are. I eagerly pre-ordered her cookbook the very first day that Amazon had it available for pre-order back in May. I’ve honestly been counting down the days until this cookbook was out (I don’t think I’ve been this excited about anything in a long time!), and practically grabbed it out of the hands of the delivery person this morning when it showed up. :-) It does not disappoint! This is one book that you need to have on your shelves if you love sweet treats!

While Katie’s blog does contain entrees, this cookbook focuses just on desserts — and wow! What amazing desserts these are!

Also, although the title doesn’t mention it, all of the recipes in this book are, in fact, vegan.

This is one of my all-time favorite children’s books. One sunny day, a caterpillar pops out of an egg. He is very hungry and begins searching for food. Now, many of Eric Carle’s books have gimmicks–the tactile web in THE VERY BUSY SPIDER and the chirping in THE VERY QUIET CRICKET, for example. The gimmick in this book is that the caterpillar eats holes through all the food, holes that are actually punched into the pages of the book. It’s a good gimmick, actually. Also, many of Carle’s books teach conventions–telling time in THE VERY GROUCHY LADYBUG and animal sounds in THE VERY BUSY SPIDER, for example. This one teaches the days of the week. On Monday, the caterpillar eats this, on Tuesday he eats that, and so forth. Very cute. Eventually, he becomes a fat caterpillar. He then spins himself a cocoon, where he rests for two weeks. And when he emerges…well, you can guess the results. It’s a wonderful story. Best of all, the text is very simple as are the illustrations, so the book will appeal to toddlers as well as the pre-K and kindergarten crowd. In fact, it may appeal more to toddlers, because the story is so very simple. I know I read it as a kindergartener. I loved the holes but found the story rather boring. I read it to my two-year-old this spring, however, and he went nuts over it. The days of the week were lost on him, but he was fascinated by the caterpillar turning into a butterfly–he had no idea! Can’t tell you how many times we read it. We also re-enacted it, crawling on the floor and eating, spinning ourselves into cocoons, and popping out with fluttery wings.

Story Synopsis:
- A caterpillar eats his way through different foods until he is full and weaves a cocoon transforming into a beautiful butterfly. Charming colorful illustrations of foods along with the fat caterpillar and catchy little holes in the foods where the caterpillar “had his snack” make this book a hit with young children.
Review:
- Eric Carle’s classic, “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” has charmed millions over the years with it’s simple memorable story, striking illustrations and the gimmicky holes on each of its’ pages. To date, more than 12 million copies of this book have been sold in its original, full-sized edition, and mini editions. This beloved tale of science and gluttony has also been translated into 20 languages and counting. Die-cut pages (each page has a hole where the “caterpillar” ate through the food item) illustrate what the caterpillar ate on successive days. Strikingly bold, colorful pictures and a simple text in large, clear type tell the story of a hungry little caterpillar’s culinary progress through an amazing variety and quantity of foods. Full at last, he weaves a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep, to emerge a few weeks later as a wonderfully transformed and beautiful butterfly! The final, double-page picture of the butterfly is a joyous explosion of color, a vibrant affirmation of the wonder and beauty of Nature. This story is a hit every time. Carle’s bright colors and clever die-cut artwork never cease to entertain even the youngest child, and there is surely nothing in nature closer to magic than the emergence of a butterfly. This is a beautiful, educational and fun book.
Literary Features For Young Readers:
- Simple words appropriate to pre-readers, younger children and ELLs (English Language Learners).

I am not quite finished with the book, but so far, I think it is very well written. It covers a topic that is difficult to talk about and is often avoided. It has been challenging for me to get through; however, I feel like I should add my perspective. I was diagnosed with cancer at 10. I am now 15 years old and a teen-age cancer survivor. I am a volunteer and advocate for pediatric cancer awareness.

This book has gotten negative reviews based on several points:
1) This is from another reviewer: “The characters are not believable. They do not speak like teenagers. They do not even handle situations like teenagers do. So many interactions between Gus and Hazel are interactions which, plain and simple, just would not happen between real, emotional, scared, awkward, virgin teenagers, let alone ones with cancer who have been socially cut off for much of their lives.”

*My point-of-view: Have you spent time with any of us? They are believable as teen-age cancer patients/survivors. We may look like teen-agers, but in our heads, we are not. We have had to face our own mortality and make choices we should never have to make. It makes us grow up…quickly. Most of us do not act or speak like teen-agers because that is no longer how we think. After treatment, many of us find the things most teens (and sometimes adults) are worried about are trivial. Society cuts us off, but we are not cut off from each other. These types of interactions do happen. And, it is emotional and scary, but we learn to tell it like it is, without the normal fluff and awkwardness. We find ‘normal’ where we can and try to live every single day we have because we know that time is an illusion.

2) The parents are not real, not deep characters, and they do not have their own identities.

Although his brother Hank might argue that the real “fault in our stars” is that our sun contains limited amounts of hydrogen, which will cause it to eventually run out of the only fuel source capable of supporting its mass against gravity, thereby expanding until its outer shell envelops our tiny planet and consumes it in a fiery death, I think it is more likely that John Green’s title refers to a line from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar:

“The fault, dear Brutus is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings.” Caesar (I, ii, 140-141)

What does this quote mean and how does it relate to a novel about two kids dying of cancer? I’ll explore that below.

The Fault in Our Stars is the story of two 16-year-olds who meet at a cancer support group. Hazel Lancaster, the narrator, is afflicted with terminal thyroid cancer which has ravaged her lungs enough to necessitate the use of an oxygen tank wherever she goes. It is during a support meeting that she is introduced to Augustus Waters, whose leg was claimed by a malignant bone tumor and who soon becomes the object of her affection.

When I learned of the plot of this novel, I was initially a bit turned off. I’m reminded of a comment a friend made when I asked her if she wanted to go see the movie 50/50, upon which she exclaimed “who wants to go see a movie about people dying of cancer?” I couldn’t come up with a satisfactory response, and we settled for a two-hour movie about the competitive world of robot fighting (which still caused me to shed a tear). So why would anyone, especially young adults, want to read about “cancer kids?

I’m a big fan of Mark Bittman and his crusade to get America cooking at home, and How to Cook Everything Fast is going to be a real help to get people doing just that. This isn’t just a collection of recipes – it’s an explanation of the process of cooking faster. All the little things that an experienced home cook does without even thinking about it, plus a lot of tricks and shortcuts that even experienced cooks aren’t likely to know all of them.

The title of the book might make you think that this is just another collection of quick recipes, but there’s actually a lot more than that going on here. You see, an experienced home cook does a lot of things automatically without thinking about it. You rearrange steps, you prep this while that cooks, you do this while the water is coming to a boil, and so on. What’s special about this book is that he writes up each recipe in a prep/cook format that builds the prep into the recipe for maximum efficiency. For a newer cook, I can see how this would really speed up the learning curve. Even for an experienced cook, he throws in some ideas that new (to me at least!), like using the broiler to heat oil on a pan for faster baking.

I’ve made a few recipes from this already (a few have been available around the web for awhile). The Fast Chicken Parmesan was the first one I made. Most recipes for this take about an hour, this one took me 28 minutes, and probably would have been a few minutes less except I used fresh mozzarella so I couldn’t grate it and had to cut it into slices, that probably added a couple minutes. My husband and family really liked it, I would probably use a little less oil in it next time but I liked it too.

It takes a formidable cookbook to gain entry to my kitchen. Counter and shelf space is limited. I doubted a cookbook this year would make the cut. Then How to Cook Everything Fast came along, and now it’s in the kitchen–which makes sense because some of my other books in the kitchen are Mark Bittman books.

How to Cook Everything Fast is a veritable encyclopedia of how to get anything on the table in less time. With this book, you’ll be able to fix something to eat much faster than by calling and waiting for takeout. It is a sturdy, hardbound book that lies open without the aid of a cookbook stand so that you can toss it on the counter and cook from it. The type for the actual recipes is a bit larger than I am accustomed to in my other cookbooks which is a huge perk. Those of you who buy cookbooks for the pictures will be a tad disappointed. In the tradition of Bittman’s other "How to Cook Everything", you’ll find a few sparse, line drawings. Bittman’s recipes need no pictures. He is a concise and clear recipe author.

Another reviewer noted this book might not be for a beginner cook or someone who has a difficult time with directions. I agree. Bittman uses the principle of multi-tasking to get food on the table more quickly. The recipes use both blue and black type. The black type is an actual cooking step while the blue type directs you to prep another ingredient while your dish cooks. It’s a terrific layout that illustrates how a seasoned home cook gets food on the table. Think of how often you chop veggies while your pasta water is boiling, and you’ll get the picture. He also utilizes some different cooking techniques to streamline the process or add flavor to your food such as putting a little oil in the bottom of a roasting pan to get a nice sear on your meat.

This book is well-written and very nicely designed. Beyond that, it’s hard to see what the fuss is about.

First of all, and on the one hand, the book isn’t the torrent of Machiavellian amorality you may have been led to believe. The author does go out of his way to make it _sound_ as though he’s presenting you with sophisticated, in-the-know, just-between-us-hardheaded-realists amoral guidance. But as a matter of fact almost every bit of this advice _could_ have been presented without offense to the most traditional of morality.

(For example, the law about letting other people do the work while you take the credit is made to sound worse than it really is. Sure, it admits of a “low” interpretation. But it’s also, read slightly differently, a pretty apt description of what any good manager does.)

Second, and on the other hand, the advice isn’t _that_ good; it’s merely well-presented. How it works will depend on who follows it; as the old Chinese proverb has it, when the wrong person does the right thing, it’s the wrong thing.

And that’s why I have to deduct some stars from the book. For it seems to be designed to appeal precisely to the “wrong people.”

Despite some sound advice, this book is aimed not at those who (like Socrates) share the power of reason with the gods, but at those who (like Ulysses) share it with the foxes. It seeks not to make you reasonable but to make you canny and cunning. And as a result, even when it advises you to do things that really do work out best for all concerned, it promotes an unhealthy sense that your best interests are at odds with nearly everyone else’s. (And that the only reason for being helpful to other people is that it will advance your own cloak-and-dagger “career.
