As a fan of Jodi Picoult, I was looking forward to reading her new novel. By the time I finished reading this novel, I was left with a feeling of astonishment. It is at once a storyline of such depth on the research of grieving elephants, and so rich in the storylines of those involved.

Jenna Metcalf’s mother, Alice, disappeared after a caregiver was trampled by an elephant. Jenna’s father has been in a psychiatric institution since that time, and Jenna lives with her grandmother. Jenna has not been able to forget her mother, or come to terms that her mother would leave her. Jenna does everything she can to find her mother, looking online and reads all of Alice’s old journals.

Alice was a research scientist studying elephant grief. Alice spent most of her time with the elephants that she loved. While in Africa, Alice met Thomas who ran an elephant refuge in New Hampshire. They went back to New Hampshire, married and had Jenna. All the while the love of elephants based their existence. As time goes by, Jenna is unable to find anything to support her queries about her mother. Jenna finds two people to help her, Serenity a doubted psychic, and Virgil Stanhope an older private detective. Jenna, Serenity, Thomas and Alice tell the story in alternating chapters.

Jodi Picoult does a great deal of research for her books, and with this one, she went to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, and met with Professor Abigail Baird. She also went to Vassar with Abigail Baird, who taught her all about the brain and how memory works. Then, they went to Botswana to work with Jeanetta Selier, a Ph.D. researcher who studies herds in the Tuli block. Jodi Picoult goes on to tell us about the fascinating aspects of elephants and what she learned.

There are two extreme ways to interpret this book, as shown by the multiple ratings of 1 and 5.

The first: This is a beautiful and sad story of unconditional love between a tree and a boy, in which the tree is generous and gives of itself to help the boy whenever he is in trouble. The metaphor in this case is that of a mother and a child, or God and a human.

The second: This is a story of a very selfish boy and a tree who loves him. Whenever he is in trouble, he returns to the tree who gives him another part of her self without ever setting limits, even though it makes her sad (and physically damages her) to do so. In this case, you can compare the story to a metaphor of an abusive, codependent relationship.

I can understand both views of this story, but the fact that the second interpretation is just as valid as the first makes me hesitate to recommend this book. Personally, I would NOT buy this book as a gift, or for my own children. If I had this book, I would wait to read it to my children until they reach the recommended 10 years old (or at least 8), and then I would discuss the book and its concepts (selfishness, limit setting/saying NO) with them. “What did you think of this book?” “Do you think that the tree/the boy did the right thing?” “What would you have done differently if you were the tree/the boy?” “If you were the tree, would you have said ‘NO’ to the boy at any point?”

A story that may be complementary to this one and more appropriate for younger audiences is “Ladies First”, also by Shel Silverstein (found in “A Light in the Attic” or “Free to Be, You and Me”), which is about a girl who always gets to be first to do everything, but in the end that is not to her advantage.

The seventh installment in the Detective Michael Bennett series, Burn by James Patterson, and co-written with Michael Ledwidge, is vastly different from the many other books the master-storyteller has written during the past two years. Patterson has co-authored a number books with different authors, yet the Detective Michael Bennett series is the one and only series in which he has consistently teamed up with Michael Ledwidge, and it has never failed to throw up surprises. The latest installment, Burn, is no different and fans of the series are in for an exciting ride as Detective Michael Bennett is thrust into a topsy-turvy world trying to solve two difficult cases.

But if you want an explosive start you are in for a surprise as the book begins on a sedate note which James Patterson exploited to the hilt to build up the story. Books that begin with a real cracker like Cross My Heart (Alex Cross #21) actually fizzled out in the end. But what keeps me reading James Patterson is his relaxed writing style and short chapters which is not common and certainly easy to follow. As you dig deeper into the book the story begins to take a stranglehold on you, leaving you no choice but to keep going to the very end.

After busting the Sun King drug cartel and crossing swords with crime lord Manuel Perrine in Los Angeles (Gone, Michael Bennett #6), Detective Michael Bennett of the Major Crimes Division, along with his family finally returns home to New York. Bennett looks forward to a quiet time but is soon reassigned to Outreach Squad in Harlem. Grudgingly he takes over and is soon embroiled in a new case when a burnt body is found in a building where a caller had earlier informed to have witnessed strange goings-on.

James Patterson and Michael Ledwidge have again teamed up to create another Michael Bennett thriller, Burn. This installment may very well scorch the Patterson fans’ avid appetite, as this rousing novel follows two intense cases.

Be forewarned before the Burn ignites, some readers are likely to find the first several chapters to be uncommonly uneventful – but to be fair, there is nothing inherently wrong with allowing a story to unfold – luckily with Patterson’s particular conversational style of storytelling and very short chapters – which I truly love – things really just move along as they should.

Bennett and his crew stumble upon the secret life of a successful powerful political figure and his friends, as they enter an underworld of terrifying depravity, madness and murder. Just when Bennett and his crew are close to apprehending the suspects, his attention is demanded elsewhere…. A five-man team is robbing high-end jewelry stores and wreaking havoc across the city.

Bennett finds himself being pulled in two different directions as the demands to quickly solve both puzzling cases fall on his shoulders. To add to his anxiety…someone claiming to be the biological father of one of Bennett’s adopted daughters, is trying to take her away from him. With all this chaos going on, his longtime nanny and “significant other” Mary Catherine, has to leave the country to handle a family emergency of her own.

This journey will have readers wondering….will Michael Bennett be able to solve one of the most horrific cases of his career? Uncover the underlining motive behind a string of seemingly random diamond heist. Squash a silly twenty-year old rivalry, and save his career. Keep his daughter from the clutches of a father with ulterior motives.

Baseball fans across the country have been watching with interest and sadness as New York Yankees captain and baseball icon Derek Jeter is playing out his last year in baseball. Many people wonder what he will do next, and his answer is : become a publisher.

Jeter has his own publishing imprint with Simon & Schuster, where he will publish books by authors he finds have an something interesting to say. The first book under the Jeter Publishing imprint is for children ages 8-12 titled The Contract. Jeter wrote it with Paul Mantell, and it is based on his own life as a Little Leaguer.

Young Derek Jeter, called ‘old man’ by his mom because he went to school in a suit and carrying a briefcase, is a talented baseball player and a serious student. When his classroom teacher assigns the students an essay describing their realistic future dreams, Derek really wants to write that his future plans include playing shortstop for the New York Yankees.

He discusses this with his parents, who encourage him to realize how difficult it will be, but with his excellent work ethic and determination and practice, he can do just that.

Derek signs up for Little League and ends up playing on a team with his best friend Vijay. He wants to play shortstop, but the coach’s son is the star shortstop with a bad attitude.

Much of the book describes in detail many of the Little League games, and children who love baseball will so enjoy the thrilling play-by-play. But this book is also one parents should read to or with their children.

Derek would not be the great player he is today were it not for his parents. They created a contract for Derek, detailing what he needs to do to set himself on a path to achieving his dream.
